Anyone with a preference for American brands surely has heard of the Craftsman vs. DeWalt product comparison before. Although the two brands cater to different market classes, did you know that they sell similar tools and accessories?
To avoid getting caught in the confusion, I decided to evaluate these popular tool companies and determine which brand offers better quality.
Quick History and Background
Brand | Craftsman Tools | DeWalt Tools |
Year Founded | 1927 | 1924 |
Main Office/Headquarters | China | Pennsylvania |
Parent Company/Manufacturer | Black and Decker | Black and Decker |
Top Products | Stanley Black & Decker, Sears, Dunlap, Craftsman | Original Saw Co., DeWalt, Black & Decker |
Craftsman
The general confusion between Craftsman and DeWalt is the fact that both brands came from the same parent company, Black and Decker. However, did you know that the trademark that Craftsman power tools use was registered by Sears way back in 1927?
Over the years, this power tool brand became one of the first companies to introduce customer loyalty programs. This reward system launched in 1991 is what geared Craftsman Tools to popularity until today.
Craftsman Tools’ market skyrocketed when Black and Decker took over, and their product lines were sold in places other than Sears and K-Mart.
DeWalt
The brief history of the DeWalt line started a little earlier than the Craftsman brand when Raymond DeWalt introduced the radial arm saw in 1924. But it wasn’t until 1947 that the brand finally got incorporated.
Two years later, the American brand was acquired by the American Machine and Foundry Company. However, it didn’t take long until Black and Decker purchased DeWalt in 1960 and managed it until now.
It may surprise you, but their long industry experience led them to manufacture over 200 power tools and 800 attachments in 2001. This continued success led DeWalt to target the professional contractor industry and distribute non-powered hand tools.
And by 2016, they manufactured the FlexVolt battery pack, and DeWalt cordless tools started to make a buzz.
Features of Craftsman and DeWalt
Manufacturing Facilities
Craftsman
Craftsman tools are sourced from different factories, such as Apex Tool Group, which manufactures Craftsman products in China and Taiwan. But as the brand transitions to Black & Decker, the plant for these power tools is being built in Texas.
DeWalt
Considering how long DeWalt power tool selections are in the market, it’s no surprise that it has seven manufacturing facilities in the USA.
As of now, DeWalt’s high-quality tools are being made in Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Connecticut, Kentucky, and Indiana. The brand also has factories outside the country, in Brazil, China, and the UK.

Design and Weight
Craftsman
Although Craftsman is known for its cordless tools, I’ve personally found their products in the heavier category. Also, several tools under its product line could weigh up to 9 pounds.
DeWalt
In comparison to Craftsman, DeWalt provides a wider range of light-duty tool selections. Upon closer inspection, DeWalt tools are approximately 50% lighter than those of other brands. However, it’s important to note that the weight difference may vary depending on the specific type of tool being considered.
Performance and Durability
Craftsman
Performance-wise, Craftsman and DeWalt are almost at the same level if the power of the corded tools under their product line are compared. However, users must expect less power when it comes to their cordless tool collection.
On the bright side, you can rely on this brand’s durability and material quality if you want a product that will last in the toolbox for years to come.
DeWalt
When it comes to battery-powered tools like cordless drills, DeWalt offers more power than most of its alternatives. Because of that, it performs faster and smoother.
Tools with brushless motors also tend to deliver better performance. As for durability, tools under this line are made of high-quality steel that you can rely on even in harsh conditions.

Price
Craftsman
You may think that lower price means lower quality, but you can buy quite a decent tool selection in Craftsman under 50 bucks. If it’s a heavy-duty power tool you’re seeking, I recommend preparing $200 or more.
Craftsman also sells accessories and kits separately. Thanks to this, customers can have significant savings.
DeWalt
For items like drill bits, lithium-ion batteries [1], and other accessories, you can expect DeWalt to offer lower prices. However, its high-grade tools are considerably more expensive than what Craftsman offers.
Customer Service
Craftsman
If you’re a newbie in handling tools, having a great customer support team will be a great help in your DIY journey. Lucky for you, Craftsman has a dedicated helpline to resolve your issues. Other than that, shipping fees are not required when you return tools to their accredited repair centers.
DeWalt
Both DeWalt and Craftsman have reliable customer service. Besides resolving your issues by phone, DeWalt representatives also send out tool parts you’ve ordered within a few days.
Warranty
Craftsman
Like any other manufacturer, Craftsman offers a standard power tool warranty of three years. For hand tools, users are granted lifetime warranties. However, the brand does not grant warranties for damaged parts caused by normal wear and tear.
DeWalt
In my opinion, DeWalt has a better warranty because its duration often ranges from 3 to 7 years. But just like Craftsman, damaged parts of your hammer drills or any tool aren’t covered, especially if it’s due to a wear and tear situation. On the bright side, this brand offers one year of free service.

Direct Comparison: Angle Grinders
For a closer product comparison, I decided to personally test both the DeWalt DWE402 and the Craftsman CMCG400B angle grinder.
Although the two batteries that these products run with have the same voltage, I’ve observed that DeWalt delivers more torque during the operations. Besides that, it operates at a higher RPM, allowing tasks to finish faster.
Direct Comparison: Circular Saws
When the talk about reliable corded saws comes up, DeWalt DWE575 and Craftsman CMES510 always take the spotlight.
With the same 15-amp motor and 7 ¼ size, you’d think that these tools are equally good. However, Craftsman actually has a slightly faster RPM than its alternative. Plus, it’s more affordable too!
Direct Comparison: Cordless Drills
Both brands feature top-of-the-line cordless drill selections: DeWalt DCD991B and Craftsman CMCD710C2. Both are packed with a similar brushless engine and half-inch chuck, so choosing between these drills is a tough decision.
However, the three-speed position, lighter weight, and higher torque led me to consider DeWalt as the superior choice in this category.

Should You Get Corded or Cordless Tools?
It depends on your project requirements. While corded power tools limit your flexibility, you must know that cordless machines are run by one battery (two, if it’s high-end) and deliver lesser power than corded ones.
What is the Difference Between Brushed and Brushless Tools?
If you have a brushed tool, you’ll need to replace the brushes for every 50 to 60 hours of operations. It’s the kind of maintenance you don’t need for the brushless version. Plus, it has a longer motor lifespan and smoother performance.
FAQ
Are DeWalt batteries the same as Craftsman?
No, DeWalt batteries are not the same as Craftsman. Most of them may have the same voltage and type, but the battery system and connections are completely distinct. It’s always safe to use batteries from the same brand to avoid unprecedented damages.
Overall Winner: Dewalt
Comparing Dewalt vs. Craftsman will make you realize that these brands have very few differences. However, if you want a tool for regular use, I recommend the Dewalt product line for its lightweight and professional design.
The prices may discourage you at first, but its durability will ensure that you get your money’s worth over time.
