With endless planers in the market guaranteeing high-quality performance, many buyers end up duped with a substandard model that cannot smoothly finish a project. While the DeWalt DCP580B hails from a reputable brand, is it really a brushless planer that delivers?

In this DeWalt DCP580B 20V Max brushless planer review, our woodworking pros unpack its features and performance to see if it’s worth your purchase.

What We Like

What We Don't Like

Design and Build Quality

As we have reviewed different DeWalt power tools, we can say that this planer has a familiar DeWalt feel regarding its build quality, design, and materials.

The planer is well-made, sturdy, and operates without any rattles or squeaks. It is a cordless planer with a well-designed and well-built construction for precision and ease of use.

The materials used for the rubberized handles, knobs, buttons, and back and front shoes are all of high quality and are consistent with other premium models in its class.

It’s powered by a brushless motor, which is more efficient and durable than traditional brushed motors, and has an aluminum shoe designed to withstand the rigors of heavy use and provide accurate planing.

However, one drawback to be aware of is that the dust chute of this tool can only be attached on the right side, as it is positioned in accordance with the placement of the belt.

This arrangement is typically seen in lower-priced models, and it may limit the versatility and convenience of dust collection options for some users.

Additionally, the dust bag must be purchased separately, which can add to the overall cost.

DeWalt DCP580B 20V Max Brushless Planer Features

Overview of Specs

Power

This DeWalt DCP580B cordless planer is powered by a 20V Max Lithium-Ion battery that provides ample power to tackle a wide range of planing applications.

It can maintain a no-load speed of 15,000 RPM, resulting in a maximum of 30,000 cuts per minute, but we observed that this vary based on the specific task at hand.

Blade

The DeWalt DCP580B planer features a twin-blade drum with a reversible carbide blade, which we utilized exclusively for all our testing projects and achieved consistently smooth surfaces across various materials.

This also doubles the life of the blade. When one side of the blade becomes dull, you can simply reverse it to use the other side. This feature saves you time and money by reducing the need for frequent blade changes.

Shoes

The shoes of the planer are made of aluminum with precise alignment and a V-shaped slot in the center of the toe for chamfering. It has a front and rear shoe to provide stability and guide the planer for a smooth finish. The front shoe can be adjusted for bevel cuts, while the rear shoe can be adjusted to control the depth of the cut to achieve the desired thickness.

We were worried about the toe part having only one slot. Other models that are cheaper have two or three slots, which would be more convenient to work with.

Adjustment Knobs

This planer has a maximum depth capacity of 2mm (equivalent to 5/64 inches. Its adjustment knob is calibrated to change the depth in increments of 1/256 of an inch (approximately 0.01mm). The knob is located on the side for easy and precise control.

Storage

It has onboard storage for the Torx wrench and key, which fit securely and tightly, preventing them from getting lost. There is also internal blade storage located at the rear of the tool, just below the Torx wrench.

Cutting Performance and Capacity

The DeWalt DCP580B planer can cut material up to 3-1/4 inches wide and 5/64 inches deep in a single pass, making it great for removing material from doors, cabinets, and floors.

It has a powerful brushless motor that provides consistent performance resulting in a smooth finish. The precision-machined front and back shoe provide stability and control, allowing for precise cuts on rough or uneven surfaces.

Ease of Use

It is well-balanced, with ergonomic handles that provide a secure grip and reduce user fatigue. The adjustment knobs are easy to turn, allowing for quick and precise depth and bevel adjustments.

On-board storage for the blade, Torx key, and wrench eliminates the need to search for these items, saving time. The planer’s cutting performance is consistent and jam-free, and its cordless design adds to its ease of use and mobility.

Versatility

It has adjustable front and rear shoes that allow for bevel cuts and precise depth control, making it ideal for different materials and projects.

It is cordless and compatible with DEWALT’s 20V MAX battery platform, providing the convenience of mobility on job sites or in areas with limited power sources.

Box Items

It comes with a user’s guide that includes information on assembly, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

It also has a wrench used to adjust and replace the blades, and we also found a guide fence that can be attached to the planer to help guide the material being planed.

Additional Features

The features that we need to highlight are the Poly-V drive belt [1] which greatly enhances the power transmission from the motor to the blades, and the kickstand that is included with the planer.

It can be set down on a work surface without damaging the blades or workpiece. Also, it has carbide blades on both sides that can be flipped and changed out with ease, which increases the longevity of the blades and minimizes periods of inactivity.

Product Guarantee

The DeWalt DCP580B is backed by a noteworthy warranty. It includes a limited warranty that lasts for three years and consists of a complimentary one-year servicing option and a 90-day money-back guarantee.

Compared to other brands that usually offer warranties that last for only 1 or 2 years, DeWalt’s 3-year warranty demonstrates their high level of assurance in the tool’s resilience and longevity.

Product Recommendations for you

Overall, DeWalt’s warranty policy is a sign of its commitment to producing quality and reliable tools that can withstand extended periods of use.
