I can’t emphasize enough how crucial it is for a chainsaw to function smoothly during any woodwork. A malfunctioning chainsaw can jeopardize both the task at hand and your safety. Believe it or not, troubleshooting might be simpler than it seems. So, wondering how can you address issues with a Husqvarna chainsaw 455 rancher?

Let me guide you through the usual problems I encounter with this chainsaw and my go-to solutions.

Common Husqvarna Chainsaw 455 Rancher Issues + Best Solutions

Issue #1: Defective Engine Due to Bad Airflow

Your engine requires good airflow to burn fuel. Improper combustion will wreck the engine’s efficiency.

Solution: Replace the Air Filter

Inspect the air filter for any blockages; if you find one, replace it promptly. Remove the dirty filter and install a new one, which can be easily found at affordable prices. Installing the new filter is a straightforward process.

Issue #2: Bad Fuel System or Bad Fuel Mix

From my experience, when a chainsaw runs lean or rich, it’s often due to an improper fuel mix. I’ve seen firsthand how both scenarios can wear out an engine over time.

Solution #1: Check Fuel Tank Level

Ensure that your engine’s tank has enough fuel.

Solution #2: Check the Correct Fuel Mix

Ensure your engine is running on a good fuel mix. If you haven’t used your saw for a long time, dispose of the old fuel and replace it with a new fuel mix.

Solution #3: Refill With Fresh and High-Quality Fuel

Make sure you’re using high-quality, premium fuel. It will help keep the efficiency of your chainsaw.

Solution #4: Inspect the Fuel Lines

The fuel line connects to the fuel tank. Check the fuel lines for cracks or damages. If you find any physical damage, replace it.

Solution #5: Unclog or Replace Carburetor

Check if the carburetor is clogged. Clean the buildup, or better yet, replace the carburetor entirely for a better running engine.

Issue #3: Ignition Failure Due to Bad Spark Plugs

Spark plugs are critical components in the spark system. When I’ve encountered a faulty ignition, it’s often been because of bad spark plugs, and believe me, that’s not good for the saw’s engine.

Solution #1: Inspect the Spark Plugs Closer

Check the spark plugs if they are worn out. This might create a gap between electrodes. So, inspect for gaps or other dirt issues. If any issue persists, I recommend replacing the spark plugs.

How to Check the Spark Plugs?

  1. Locate the spark plugs.
  2. Remove it and check for dirt buildup. Clean it as needed.
  3. Attach the spark plug wire. Touch the metal plug head and pull the cord.
  4. If there are sparks, your system is fine. If not, check the gaps. Ensure the gaps are enough as too much gap causes electrode spark failure or a lesser gap halts air to incite an ignition.
  5. If the gap is too big, spark plugs might be worn out over time. So, I recommend replacing them entirely.

Issue #4: Husqvarna 455 Rancher Won't Start or Hard to Start

If your Husqvarna chainsaw doesn’t start, you may try the following quick fixes:

Solution #1: Unclog or Replace Dirty Air Filter

Check the air filter for clogs. Clean the filter to let air flow through smoothly. Or, if it’s worn out, replace the dirty air filter.

Solution #2: Check Piston Ring for Damages (High Or Low Compression)

If you’re in low compression, check for leaking pieces and replace them. However, if you’re on high compression, a worn-out or damaged piston ring can cause low compression. Make sure to replace faulty piston rings.

Solution #3: Replace Damaged and Faulty Spark Plug

Inspect for spark plug damage. If you find any physical damage, I advise replacing the spark plugs.

Solution #4: Work With the Stubborn Starter During Cold Weather Conditions

Cold weather can indeed be a challenge when starting a chainsaw. In such situations, I usually look for the choke to kickstart the saw. Most chainsaws have a choke setting specifically designed for colder conditions.

Engaging this setting enhances the fuel flow from the carburetor’s fuel and air mixture, aiding in smoother starts.

Issue #5: Husqvarna 455 Rancher Loses Tension

When your chainsaw loses tension, it may cause high vibrations. Over time, the chain can also loosen up because of this.

Solution: Adjust the Chainsaw Chain's Bar Tension

Tighten the chain’s bar tension and get the right chainsaw chain direction of your Husqvarna 455 saw.
