I have had the privilege of using the Stihl 025, a chainsaw manufactured by the renowned Stihl company. This chainsaw had a production run spanning over a decade, from 1991 to 2002, when the MS250 eventually succeeded it.
The Stihl 025 is a versatile chainsaw that can occasionally be used. During the time of its production, it had all the coveted technology and features that a chainsaw can have.
An example of those features and technology is the side-access chain tensioner, a feature that is now a standard for most chainsaws today. To know more about it in detail, here is a quick guide:
Production of Stihl 025 Chainsaw
For record purposes, it is vital to know that the production of the Stihl 025 ended 20 years ago, but for most people, this Stihl unit is still their go-to chainsaw for light activities such as woodcutting and the like.
Although it is far from being a Stihl pro cutting saw that is comparable to Stihl MS440 Magnum, it still does its most basic tasks, such as cutting firewood and most hard or softwood, for many years without issues.
Functions of Stihl 025
The following are the functions I found on the Stihl 025:
- The Stihl 025 can be used for cutting down small trees
- It can also work fine when turning logs into lumber
- It is good for firewood chopping
- It can be helpful with gardening
Specifications of the Stihl 025
Unlike the Stihl 028 50cc chainsaw, the Stihl 025 is a 3HP and a 45cc chainsaw that weighs over 45 pounds. In terms of its power to weight ratio [1], it has a bearable number for its time.
Other mentions in terms of its specifications include the following:
- It has a powerhead weight of 10.3 lbs
- It has an automatic oiler
- It has the best bar length of 16″
- It also has an excellent power to weight ratio
In terms of what it is made up of, the Stihl 025 has:
Stihl 025: The Bar and Chain, Motor, and the Fueling System
- It has an off-air filter cover
- It has an inboard-mounted chain break
- It has a two-piston ring
- The sprocket that can be easily replaced
The Bar and Chain
The Stihl brand reduced kickback bar is used in model 025. The model 025 may accommodate bars with a length of 12, 14, 16, or 18 inches. You can view the size chart of the Stihl Chainsaw Bars and Chains to see how these sizes differ. Green labeling identifies low-kickback bars and chains.
These chains are offered in Picco-Micro1 and Rapid-Micro2 styles, respectively, for reduced kickback chains with a 3/8″ pitch. 3/8″ PICCO types of saw chains have a 0.050″ gauge and may be used with all four bar sizes. Pitch.325″ chains have a bigger gauge of.063″ and may only be used with bars that are 16 or 18 inches in length.
Motor
Stihl created a chainsaw with a single-cylinder two-stroke engine through model 025. It has an Engine of 45.4 cubic centimeters with a diameter of 42 millimeters and a stroke of 32 millimeters.
The 021 and 023 versions utilize the same ignition system as the 025. Without a breaker, an electronic magneto serves as the ignition system. The Bosch model WSR 6 F or the NGK BPMR 7 A with a gap setting of 0.5mm is the standard-issue spark plug used in model 025.
Fueling System
The model 025 chainsaw’s engine is fueled by a combination of unleaded gasoline and two-cycle engine oil. It utilizes an all-position diaphragm carburetor with an integrated fuel pump. For optimal performance, the recommended fuel-to-oil ratio is 50:1, using oil classified as TC.
Fuel and oil are kept in a pint-sized tank together. Automatic plunger-type oil pumps are used to lubricate the chainsaw’s bar, connected to the engine’s throttle. The 025 can hold 0.4 quarts of bar oil.
Features and Benefits of the Stihl 025 Chainsaw
The Stihl 025 is usually sold with a 16-inch bar at the point of purchase. It can also be used with bars from 12″ to 18″.
In my experience, the Stihl 025 can cut very fast and accurately, and it can also be used for other purposes. It is also elementary and easy to use and start unlike the Stihl 261 professional chainsaw. In terms of its size, it takes up less space.
As for the comfort aspect, it is a lot easier to handle the 025C version of Stihl. Similar to Stihl 026 model, it has other features and benefits that make it easier to start and operate.
For example, the 025C has an elastic start, making it easier to start and help in general operation. It also has an air purge and a quick adjuster, making it easier to tighten the chain.
Considering the advancement of the technology available, the Stihl 025 could be considered “too heavy.” Still, one should not have any problems regarding operation when using it for basic activities for which it is built. If you encounter some issues with turning it on, there are common ways to fix a Stihl chainsaw that won’t start.
Surprisingly, the parts of the Stihl are still available in the market, even over 20 years after the production halt.
Advantages of a Stihl 025
The following are the good aspects of using a Stihl 025:
- It has a long-lasting chainsaw
- It is a powerful and committed machine
- It is very convenient to work with
- It has all the basic things you need a chainsaw to possess
What is the price range for a Stihl 025?
The price for a Stihl 025 is not fixed. You can get it for a price ranging between 200$ to 250$, which is lower than Stihl’s frontrunner chainsaw models. Anything below that is a bargain if it is in good condition.
Where can I get a Stihl 025?
You can purchase a Stihl 025 from a physical equipment store shop around you if that is convenient and preferable. But if you prefer to shop online and see the prices of Stihl chainsaws initially, you can get it from the following platforms:
- HL Supply
- eBay
- Amazon
Other Chainsaws You Might Want to Consider
Stihl MS 250
This particular machine is the upgrade of the Stihl 025. Like the Stihl 025, it is also a 3HP, 45cc chainsaw. But this in particular can use an 18- inch bar than the 025. It also has many advanced features that are not on the 025, including the toolless fuel and oil caps, better kickback, and an easier-to-access air filter.
ECHO CS-310
This low-powered 30cc chainsaw is designed for climbing and pruning. This type of saw has an excellent power-to-weight ratio and is another trusted brand.
Husqvarna 450
This is another efficient chainsaw that runs on a 50cc chainsaw that runs comfortably with a 20-inch bar. Although it is an upgrade, you might not want to use it right away due to your experience with Stihl (if you are a user).
Conclusion
In conclusion, the 025 is a good chainsaw for completing light tasks. It’s an excellent saw to have as a backup, and it can efficiently serve your cutting needs. If you spot one at a reasonable price by any chance, it would be a good buy.
