Never Mess Up Your Miter Joints Again

Miter joints are one of the simplest joints around, and also one of the toughest to cut cleanly. The reason comes down to precision. Being off by even a fraction of a degree is enough to leave a gap.

Now multiply that across a whole frame. Cut four miter joints to go all the way around, and every fraction of error you make gets added up as you go. By the time you reach that last corner, you've usually got a joint that looks pretty rough.

A lot of folks fill that gap with sawdust and glue, and honestly, that works fine. But it works a whole lot better when you don't have much of a gap to fill in the first place.

Where the Problem Really Comes From

To fix a bad miter joint, you have to understand where the error creeps in. Every time you cut a miter, you're doing a setup. Actually, you're doing two setups, because you're cutting from two different angles — one for each side of the joint.

Every setup is a chance to be slightly off. If we can get away from repeating that setup for every cut, we can dramatically improve the quality of our miter joints. That means building a fixture, and the one I recommend is a miter sled for the table saw.

I've cut miters on miter saws and on the radial arm saw I've got sitting in my shop, and I've gotten good frames out of both. But the setup is always where things go sideways. Even with the detents that lock in at 45°, sometimes you just don't get a true 45.

Setting Up the Miter Sled

Start with your runners and your sled base, and make sure the base is perpendicular to your blade. Use a square — a speed square or a tri-square works fine — run it up against the blade, and check that it's perpendicular. It doesn't matter if the whole table of the sled is perfectly square. What matters is that this reference edge is square to the blade.

Next, take a known-good 90° piece of wood and mount it to the sled so it sits at 45° to that reference edge. For this part, a tri-square won't cut it. I used a drafting triangle, set up against the fence I'd already squared to the blade, and mounted my board so it read 45° against the triangle. You can do the exact same thing with a speed square — I just like the drafting triangle because it's bigger and easier to reference off of.

Once that piece is mounted and everything's attached, the sled is ready to cut.

The Trick That Makes It Work Every Time

Here's the part that actually matters, even if your sled isn't cut perfectly.

Cut your first piece on one side of the sled — that gives you one side of your corner.

Then take your second piece and cut it on the other side of the sled. Always cut the two mating pieces on opposite sides.

Here's why that works: when you bring those two pieces together, you get a perfect 90° corner, because both cuts were referenced off the same 90° piece of wood mounted to the sled. It doesn't matter if your sled's 45° isn't dead-on perfect — as long as one piece is cut on the left side and its mate is cut on the right side, the two errors cancel each other out and the corner comes together at true 90°.

You can check it yourself with a square once the pieces are joined, and it'll read dead square.

Proof in the Wood

Don't take my word for it — here's a frame I built using this exact miter sled. It's oak, 22½ inches by 28½ inches, and all four corners are tight. No gaps, no sawdust filler needed.

That's the beauty of this type of sled. Even if everything isn't perfectly calibrated, as long as you're cutting one piece from each side of the sled against that same 90° reference, your corners will always come together at a true 90°.
