Frequently Asked Questions

How do I precisely set the depth on a chisel to get the right angle?

We have an instructional video demonstrating how to set the sharpening angle. Once the jig is adjusted, insert the chisel into the blade holder so that it just touches the stone—this ensures the correct angle.

What size stones does the jig accommodate? Can I use my own stones?

The SharpMate fits stones 180mm to 220mm long and up to 75mm wide. It’s also compatible with standard-sized honing stones, allowing you to use higher grit stones as needed.

How wide of a blade can the chisel sharpener hold?

With the included stone, the jig supports blades up to 1 7/8" wide. If you prefer using your own, wider stone, it can hold blades up to 2 1/8" wide.

What’s the minimum chisel length that works with the jig?

The shortest chisels this jig can hold are 3 1/2 inches long.

The chisel slips, feels too tight, or won’t stay square on the stone. What should I do?

A light, even clamping pressure and proper hand placement usually solve it. Tighten the blade holder down with the chisel just barely making contact with the stone.

Grasp the blade holder with both hands, thumbs behind the blade holder and your index and middle fingers from both hands on the chisel. This will allow you to apply constant pressure to the chisel, helping to keep it straight and pressed down to the surface of the stone.

We added a quick video below that shows the ideal setup and motion. Most people find it clears things up right away. If you’re still unsure, feel free to reach out and we’ll happily take a look at your setup.

How often does the stone need to be soaked in water?

The sharpening stone should be soaked in water before each use. The first soak takes the longest, but after that, it only takes about a minute to get it ready.

Can I order just the jig without the stone?

At this time, we only sell the complete set, which includes both the jig and the stone. The jig is not available for separate purchase.

How do I use the jig?

  • Soak the Stone – Since it’s a water stone, let it soak until fully saturated before use.
  • Mount the Stone – Secure the stone in the jig with the 400-grit side facing up.
  • Set the Angle – Using a digital protractor, homemade gauge block or other angle measuring device adjust the angle so the beveled part of the blade sits flat on the stone. Tighten it in place. Chisel blades are typically sharpened to 25°. Once sharpened a "micro bevel" of 30° can be used to resharpen. You can use a variety of different guides (like an angle finder or a wood block cut to 25°) for accuracy.
  • Insert the Blade - Insert the blade into the holder, bevel side down, so that it just barely touches the stone. Use the lines on the holder to ensure that it is straight. A crooked blade will not sharpen evenly. Then tighten the thumbscrews, locking the blade in place. Please note that the act of tightening the thumbscrews will put downward pressure on the blade.
  • Sharpen with 400-Grit – Move the blade back and forth across the stone until sharp. Then, lay the back of the blade flat on the stone and lightly rub to remove the burr.
  • Refine with 1000-Grit – Flip the stone to the finer 1000-grit side, remount it, and repeat the sharpening process for a polished edge.

Does the jig support plane blades?

The SharpMate currently supports plane blades that are 1-1/2" to 1-7/8" wide. We’re developing a new version that will accommodate a wider range of blade sizes soon.
